What are Road Bikes?

Road bikes are not like your average bike you see in the shop window. They are built for speed with thin, light frames and much smaller wheels than its mountain counterpart. Road bikes are not to be used on mountain trails, but they are perfect for bike races and just going out on the road for a cycle. They are especially useful when you want to ride your bike to work, which is also a way to save yourself some money on your bike through the UK Government ‘Cycle to work Scheme’.

Are Road Bikes expensive?

Road bikes can start from around £500 for something of alright quality and can go into the thousands as you increase the quality. However, if you purchase your road bicycle under the UK Government ‘Cycle to work Scheme 1999’ you can get up to a 30% discount off your bike and your company will pay for your road bicycle and you can pay it off in a ‘hire purchase’ fashion payment plan, making road bicycles in the UK a lot cheaper just by using it to get to work instead of public transport.

Why get Road Bike Insurance?

With more speed comes a higher risk of crashes and damages, especially when you are riding on the roads of a busy city like London or Manchester. This is why making sure your road bike is insured must be a first thought after purchase.

Another reason you should get road bicycle insurance is to cover the risk of theft, which is unfortunately becoming more and more common in the UK. According to UK Crime data, there were over 80,000 reported incidents of bike theft in the UK in 2020, and with road bikes not being cheap with the prices of a road bike ranging anywhere from £500 to the thousands, having insurance against damages or theft can work out saving you more money than you spend.

No. Unlike car insurance, road bicycle insurance is not a legal requirement in the UK. However, even though you don’t have to get road bicycle insurance, it is highly recommended to protect yourself from theft or any damages that come from road bikes. This is even more important with road bicycle insurance as they are a lot smaller and lighter than their mountain counterparts so damages are more likely on road bikes vs mountain bikes.

What’s covered under standard Road Bicycle Insurance?

When looking for the best road bike insurance, here is what is generally covered:

  • Theft: If your road bike is stolen, you are covered.
  • Accidental Damage: If you damage your bicycle by accident.
  • Malicious Damage: If your road bike is vandalised or someone decides to damage it on purpose, most electric bike insurance policies will cover the repairs.

What’s not covered under standard Road Bike Insurance?

The following are not covered as standard across most road bike insurance policies but can be added as extras:

  • Accessories: If the accessories on your road bicycle (GPS, lights etc.) get stolen or even vandalised, you can pay an additional fee to have them covered.
  • Cycling Abroad: You can pay an additional fee to have your road bike covered to ride outside of the UK.
  • Competitive Use: Some Providers will even provide an option to have your road bicycle insured for competitive use, however, with electric bikes it is less common.
  • Third Party Liability: This can be added to cover any damages your road bike could make to a car or injuries it may cause in the event of crashes.

Pros and Cons of Road Bicycle Insurance

Pros:

  • The small wheels on Road bikes can wear and puncture easily.
  • Riding on the road there is a higher risk of crashes with other vehicles.
  • Extremely useful for regular cyclists.

Cons:

  • May not cover the full price of the accident, especially if a new bike entirely is required.
  • Can be paying out for something you may never see the benefit of.

Can I save money on my Road Bicycle insurance?

Yes, it is possible to save money on your road bicycle insurance in these two ways:

  • Bike value – Make sure that you insure your road bicycle for its current value, not the purchase price when you are asked to input the value of your road bike.
  • Optional add-ons – Make sure you only pay for additional extras if you know you’re going to need it.
