What are Electric Bikes?

It seems like more and more people are going electric with their bikes with more electric assisted bikes on the road than ever before. These can be used to either assist you on steep inclines or even to just take over for you when riding either way you will be arriving at places a lot quicker on one of these than a normal bike. But with higher speeds comes higher risks of crashes and subsequent damage.

E Bikes are also helpful when it comes to riding your bike to work as they can help you out whether you're tired and need that extra little boost or are late for a meeting and you need to get to work a bit quicker, ebikes are perfect for both. This is also a way to save yourself some money on your bike through the UK Government ‘Cycle to work Scheme’.

Are Ebikes expensive?

Electric bicycles can start from around £1000 for something of durable quality and can go into the thousands as you increase the quality. However, if you purchase your ebike under the UK Government ‘Cycle to work Scheme 1999’ you can get up to a 30% discount off your electric bicycle and your company will pay for your road bicycle and you can pay it off in a ‘hire purchase’ fashion payment plan, making ebikes in the UK a lot cheaper just by using it to get to work instead of public transport.

Why get your Electric Bicycle insured?

Electric bikes are quicker there is no arguing that. However, they can also be more dangerous. By adding an electric motor to your bicycle there is a risk of early acceleration and in some cases we have seen the motor even catch fire! It is because of this (among other reasons) that you should get your ebike insurance.

Another reason you should get electric bicycle insurance is to cover the risk of theft, which is unfortunately becoming more and more common in the UK. According to UK Crime data, there were over 80,000 reported incidents of bike theft in the UK in 2020, and with electric bikes no doubt being a more prized target, having ebike bicycle insurance in the UK is more important now than ever before.

No. Unlike car insurance, ebike insurance is not a legal requirement in the UK. However, even though you don’t have to get electric bicycle insurance legally in the UK, it is highly recommended to protect yourself from theft or any damages that can happen with ebikes.

What’s covered under standard Electric Bicycle insurance?

When looking for the best ebike insurance, here is what is generally covered:

  • Theft: If your electric bike is stolen, you are covered.
  • Accidental Damage: If you damage your ebike by accident.
  • Malicious Damage: If your ebike is vandalised or someone decides to damage it on purpose, most electric bike insurance policies will cover the repairs.

What’s not covered under standard Electric Bike Insurance?

The following are not covered as standard across most electric bike insurance policies but can be added as extras:

  • Accessories: If the accessories on your bike (GPS, lights etc.) get stolen or even vandalised, you can pay an additional fee to have them covered.
  • Cycling Abroad: You can pay an additional fee to have your electric bike covered to ride outside of the UK.
  • Competitive Use: Some Providers will even provide an option to have your bicycle insured for competitive use, however with electric bikes it is less common.
  • Third Party Liability: This can be added to cover any damages your electric bike could make to a car or injuries it may cause in the event of crashes.

Pros and Cons of Electric Bike Insurance UK

Pros:

  • You are covered against any potential motor damages.
  • You are protected if you crash and need repairs up to a certain amount.
  • Extremely useful for regular cyclists.

Cons:

  • May not cover the full price of the accident, especially if a new bike entirely is required.
  • Can be paying out for something you may never see the benefit of.

Can I save money on electric bicycle insurance?

Yes, it is possible to save money on your bicycle insurance in these two ways:

  • Bike value – Make sure that you insure your bicycle for its current value, not the purchase price when you are asked to input the value of your ebike.
  • Optional add-ons – Make sure you only pay for additional extras if you know you’re going to need it.
