What are Mountain Bikes?

Mountain bikes are one of the more popular styles of bicycle as they are the most compatible across multiple types of terrain. Whether it be going to your local forest with family or friends for an exciting day out, or just going out for a leisurely cycle, mountain bikes are compatible with both. With most mountain bikes the standard specs include 26-inch wheels, 21-27 gears, lower gears for easier uphill climbing and a forward-leaning position seat, and higher gears for out of the saddle hard riding.

Are Mountain Bikes expensive?

Mountain bikes can start from around £500 if not cheaper for something of alright quality and can go into the thousands as you increase the quality. However if you purchase your mountain bicycle under the UK Government ‘Cycle to work Scheme 1999’ you can get up to a 30% discount off your bike and your company will pay for your mountain bicycle and you can pay it off in a ‘hire purchase’ fashion payment plan, making mountain bicycles in the UK cheaper just by using it to get to work instead of public transport.

Why get Mountain Bicycle Insurance?

Not only are mountain bikes one of the most popular bikes on the market, they also have to endure the most rugged of terrains, certainly in comparison to road bikes, mountain bikes face the woodland trails and mountain bike trips which can lead to damages. This is why it is important to get mountain bike insurance as it protects you against the damages that can come from the terrain it will evidently face.

Another reason you should get mountain bicycle insurance is to cover the risk of theft, which is unfortunately becoming more and more common in the UK. According to UK Crime data, there were over 80,000 reported incidents of bike theft in the UK in 2020, and with road bikes not being cheap with the prices of a road bike ranging anywhere from £500 to the thousands, having insurance against damages or theft can work out saving you more money than you spend.

No. Unlike car insurance, mountain bicycle insurance is not a legal requirement in the UK. However, even though you don’t have to get mountain bicycle insurance, it is highly recommended to protect yourself from theft or any damages that come from mountain bikes. This is even more important with mountain bikes as they will face a lot of tricky terrain and making sure that you are protected against any potential damages is very important.

What’s covered under standard Mountain Bicycle Insurance?

When looking for the best mountain bike insurance, here is what is generally covered as standard:

  • Theft: If your mountain bike is stolen, you are covered.
  • Accidental Damage: If you damage your bicycle by accident it can be covered to an extent.
  • Malicious Damage: If your mountain bike is vandalised or someone decides to damage it on purpose, most electric bike insurance policies will cover the repairs.

What’s not covered under standard Mountain Bike Insurance?

The following are not covered as standard across most mountain bike insurance policies but can be added as extras:

  • Accessories: If the accessories on your mountain bicycle (GPS, lights etc.) get stolen or even vandalised, you can pay an additional fee to have them covered.
  • Cycling Abroad: You can pay an additional fee to have your mountain bike covered to ride outside of the UK.
  • Competitive Use: Some Providers will even provide an option to have your mountain bicycle insured for competitive use, however, with electric bikes it is less common.
  • Third Party Liability: This can be added to cover any damages your mountain bike can cause even in relation to fees to cover injuries if you crash into someone else.

Pros and Cons of Mountain Bike Insurance

Pros:

  • This protects yourself against the damages that may arise from the trails you will take your mountain bike on and the potential damages whether they be accidental or on purpose.
  • Protection on your mountain bicycle against theft.

Cons:

  • May not cover the full price of the accident, especially if a new bike entirely is required.
  • Can be paying out for something you may never see the benefit of.

Can I save money on my Mountain Bicycle insurance?

Yes, it is possible to save money on your mountain bicycle insurance in these two ways:

  • Bike value – Make sure that you insure your mountain bicycle for its current value, not the purchase price when you are asked to input the value of your mountain bike.
  • Optional add-ons – Make sure you only pay for additional extras if you know you’re going to need it.
